East Anglian Air Ambulance provides the very best care when the very worst happens, bringing intensive care directly to the scene of the incident in the fastest time possible. However, the impending closure of Cambridge Airport – site of one of our two operating bases – threatens to cut our lifesaving service in half.
Our bases aren’t ordinary buildings. They are vital lifelines for countless families, friends, and colleagues – anyone whose life would be devastated by the sudden tragic loss of a parent, a child, a spouse, a caregiver, or a best friend.
For this reason, our Cambridge-based crews urgently need a new home.
A new base will not only safeguard the continuity of our lifesaving service, but also enable much-needed improvements in training, public engagement, and crew welfare, allowing us to evolve and expand to meet future critical care needs. We have submitted a planning application for a replacement base just outside of Fulbourn on Balsham Road, a few miles from our current base, which will not only protect and improve our service but future proof it for generations.
We vetted dozens of sites against a stringent criterion, focused on response times, population reach by air and road, and operational and aviation compatibility, and this site was the only viable option available to us.
From September through to November 2025, we held extensive community consultation activities with surrounding communities and across Cambridge.
We have now submitted our planning application to relocate and build our new Cambridge air base, and you can read the proposals in full, and feedback directly on South Cambridgeshire District Council’s planning portal.
We are an independent charity funded by the communities we serve. This means an urgent need for our crews is also a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for you to make a difference to tens of thousands of lives for decades to come.
With £8.2m to raise to make the new base a reality we would love to talk to you about how you can come to the rescue.
