Dr Ed

Academic Lead for our Research, Audit, Innovation and Development (RAID) group, Dr Ed Barnard is a UK Defence academic consultant in emergency and prehospital emergency medicine; based in Cambridge since 2017. After four years of military General Duties serving around the globe, Ed undertook emergency medicine training in the West Midlands, Bristol, and South-West Peninsula.

In 2013 he was selected to undertake a higher degree at the US Army Institute of Surgical Research in San Antonio, Texas. This work centred on the prehospital management of critical hypovolaemia and traumatic cardiac arrest, including evaluation of whole blood, chest compressions, REBOA, SAAP, and ECLS. On return to the UK, Ed completed fellowship training in prehospital EM in the East of England. In 2018, he was awarded his PhD and was appointed as an Honorary Consultant at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and at East Anglian Air Ambulance, where he co-setup the RAID prehospital research group. In 2023, Ed was appointed as an RCEM/NIHR Associate Professor, and as the UK Defence Professor of Emergency Medicine.
