“A person, not a number.” Cheryl’s volunteering story

Cheryl Lewis, from South Norfolk, has been volunteering with East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) for four years. It followed a chance conversation on a coach trip with somebody who was already volunteering with the charity. Cheryl was so inspired that she decided to apply and hasn’t looked back since, balancing her role with EAAA with volunteering for other charities, as well as keeping a very active and happy social life.

Cheryl supports events, gives talks about EAAA and is now upskilling further to become one of the charity’s CPR trainers – perfect for a people person, like her. After an induction to the charity and some shadowing of another volunteer, Cheryl tackled her role full-on.

“I can talk for England!” Cheryl jokes, “I’m good at chatting with people and I’m at my happiest when I’m meeting others, supporting EAAA events and giving talks – I love giving talks about EAAA. People are so grateful that we can go along to their group and event, but actually we’re so thankful that they’ve asked us.”

Now with the support of husband Jon, who also volunteers with EAAA, Cheryl thrives when she’s able to meet new and “amazing people”.

“At most events I go to, somebody knows someone who has needed the help of the air ambulance, but people are astounded when they hear more about what’s involved and how much each tasking costs,” Cheryl explains.

She also recalls many moments of generosity from supporters, including a gentleman winning a television in a raffle at an event in aid of EAAA, only to donate it back to the same event’s auction, so he could bid the highest price and raise more money for the charity.

“An extra £300 was raised!” Cheryl says.

She adds that she has become so passionate about the cause but loves that the role offers her so much variety and flexibility, so she and Jon can choose what they want to do and when it suits.

“This flexibility is paramount,” Cheryl says. “It’s so rewarding and enjoyable. I’ve been to places with EAAA that I’ve never been to before, including Norwich City Football Club and a clay shoot. The variety is great.”

Cheryl says that they are always meeting new people and, as well as giving talks, she enjoys supporting EAAA’s flagship events, such as Trek 24, because there is always such a good atmosphere – and they know the difference their contribution is making; volunteers are asked to submit a record the hours they give to EAAA each month. A cost is then attributed to this, which gives an overall total. Through the hours they gave in 2023-24, EAAA volunteers funded the equivalent of 52 taskings – an incredible £195,000.

“It’s enriched my life. Jon and I have gone from jobs that we had to do, to a volunteering role we like to do,” Cheryl says. “We are very highly valued; when you volunteer with EAAA, you’re a person not a number. Everything you do, you are thanked for.”
