On 6 September, Georgina Joyce, from Soham, will be taking part in Trek 24 – Cambridgeshire alongside her Mum. They will be completing a 24-mile walk past the sights of Cambridge and the surrounding countryside to raise money for East Anglian Air Ambulance, but also to remember somebody very special – her dad.
Georgina’s Dad, David, was living in supported accommodation in Cambridgeshire when he suffered a heart attack in March 2017. A friend of his found him and contacted the emergency services. Georgina says an air ambulance was called, and her dad was taken to Addenbrooke’s but sadly he couldn’t be saved.
“My dad was so loving, funny, optimistic and kind,” Georgina says. “He loved to travel when he was younger, he trained to be a chef and was a brilliant cook – he taught me how to cut an onion properly! He also loved to play video games, always letting us join in – or at least watch!”
“We’ve previously taken part in other charity events together, and I did a skydive in 2022, but when Mum mentioned Trek 24 to me, I knew I had to do it because I wanted to do something for Dad.”
Georgina adds, “I had also seen that East Anglian Air Ambulance need to relocate their Cambridge air base and Trek 24 felt like a good support to support the charity.”
Georgina will be completing the 24-mile route with her Mum.
“I’m excited about the challenge, but I have never done anything of that length before!” She says.
As part of her preparation for the day, Georgina and her Mum will be meeting for some long training walks and breaking in new walking shoes. Georgina’s manager at work is also training for a charity walk so she hopes they will be able to do some walking together.
“I’m most looking forward to spending some quality time with my Mum,” Georgina says. “It will also be good to meet other people taking part as some may have similar experiences and motivations.”
Georgina, her Mum and fellow Trekkers will be walking 24-miles, 24 km, or 2.4 miles through the scenic landscapes surrounding Cambridge, taking in the historic charm of the city and its picturesque countryside.
“The route is especially meaningful as it passes near to where my dad used to live,” Georgina explains.
Her fundraising is off to a flying start. Having set a target of £200 she has already raised £130.
“It’s great to raise money in aid of East Anglian Air Ambulance – it’s a way of my dad’s legacy living on. It means a lot to me to take part in Trek 24 because it’s a way I can help others who may need East Anglian Air Ambulance in the future.”
